Oh, My, God

Posted in Uncategorized at 2:23 pm with tags:

finally landed in Rockford at 3:00am central time. My luggage is in minnesota and I hope to get it in the next few days. Many thanks to Ryan Doss for driving out to Rockford to get me, then trucking to the hotel and drinking a whole bottle of rum with me until 5:30am. My head hurts.

Anyhoo, this is unbelievable. Watch at your own risk.

Airport!

Posted in Uncategorized at 6:37 pm with tags:

That’s right, I’m at the airport again! DIA is truly a madhouse right now, my heart really goes out to all the employees that have to call this day of hell WORK.

I was supposed to fly to Chicago tonight, via Minneapolis.

Flight from DEN to MIN was at 3:32pm. I left my house at 10:50, caught the skyride and was in line for security by 12:35 (bless online check-in). Except that OOOPS, while waiting in the hour long security line, which wrapped all the way around the ticket concourse and down and escalator, i see that my first flight is delayed and isn’t leaving until after the connecting flight. Shit, that sucks, its hawaii all over again.

However, I get through security with plenty of time and count my blessings on that. Met an art director from LA who just shot a video in keystone, he actually knew who I-I was, who ken wilber was, and what integral naked was. He was a buddhist named morgan, pretty cool guy and way into movies. I immediately liked him and gave him my email address in case he ever swings through denver.

But, long story short, I called united on my cell phone, waiting 45 minutes, and was told I could get on a flight to Rockford tonight. Then the call cutoff. Pissed was I. Call again while waiting in the customer service line and the former agent was kind enough to book me on Rockford (it was the last seat!) Got my new ticket in the CS line after chatting with a nice elderly lady for 40 minutes. Her husband is a quadraplegic and she was supposed to go to CA on Wednesday for a vacation away from him.

Got the ticket, and their even going to try and get my baggage on that flight if I’m lucky. And the blessed Ryan Doss is driving the hour out to Rockford to pick me up at 10:15pm so we can race to the windham for a late entry to the 4th Annual IL holiday part and get drunk.

4 hours after having gotten here, I’ve seen a lot of broken dreams. The looks on peoples faces are that of devastation, sadness, and anger as their holiday plans radically change.

Assuming my flight to Rockford doesn’t get delayed, I must say I really count myself as one of the lucky ones in this whole ordeal.

update: 7:45pm. My flight is now scheduled to leave Denver at 9:50 because they have NO ONE to fly the plan. They have to wait for a crew to arrive from Portland. Holiday party A - NO NO.

Hearts of the Street, Bad, and u2

Posted in Uncategorized at 12:14 pm with tags:

I think this was Film 151 with Geoffrey Dunn, Spring, Winter Quarter 2001. It was a group project that we were all pretty happy with in the end.

Next we have BAD, from Film 172 fall 2001. It was supposed to be something about ever-present awareness, though it obviously didn’t really work and I was a little lost trying to articulate it. Lesson learned. The 16mm footage looks fucking unbelievable full res though, so while the story didn’t work the shooting did. (except for that horrendous font i used at the end)

And finally, I’ve still got to sort through it all, but here’s a clip from u2 in Hawaii 2 weekends ago:

Holy Snow Batman!

Posted in Uncategorized at 7:53 pm with tags:

We’re in the middle of a mighty snowstorm! It’s pretty mad, and doesn’t appear to be slowing down.

It’s absolutely beautiful out (other than all the stuck cars). I quite enjoyed my walk to the grocery store, which was about to close early because of the mad snow, just made it! The sky gives the snow a slightly blue tint, while the street lights add a warm yellow glow to everything. Watching the flakes fall under said street lights is particularly nice, as there’s a million little shadows to match the million little flakes.

New Projects and some tentative goals for 2007

Posted in Uncategorized at 5:20 pm with tags:

I’m feeling a strong urge not to get another job, which after doing some reading I now realize is a terrible investment of time. With most jobs, you can only make money while working. That’s not very practical!

So, three projects I have already gotten a little traction on, that I hope will be going live by January 31st, 2007:

  1. SantaCruzTraveler.com
I took all the photos for this on my sept trip, and just have to organize them and upload.
  2. IT-Boulder
Integrated Technologies of Boulder. My friend Robert and I are IT and AV gods, i think its time we make some money doing some consulting!
  3. Eye-Strain.net
Old 514 Broadway favorites Lee, Daniel, and Matt will be joining me in the creation of this film, television, video games and other new media blog. This is more of a hobby, but if we do well it will generate money in the long term thanks to advertising/google adsense.

I’ve got the domain names for them all, and have got a skeleton of the 3rd already up. Woohoo!

Other goals for 2007, which I hope to be held accountable for:

  1. I’d like to be benching regular sets at 150lbs by years end
  2. Write a 90 page screenplay
  3. Film/Produce 6 shorts (under 10 min each)
  4. Take dance classes
  5. Start Aikido
  6. Continue sitting at least 2x a week

The Dark Side of Oz

Posted in Uncategorized at 3:53 pm with tags:

So what’ve I been doing with all my recently acquired free time? Well, for one, I finally made a DVD dub of The Wizard of Oz/Dark Side of the Moon. No more hitting play and pause and shit, just pop in the disc and go! Sweet. I’ll make copies for those that want them. $5 plus shipping and handling. haha….

I’m fairly proud of the image I whipped up for the DVD Menu on the right, I think it looks cool. Bless photoshop.

Stupid Orbitz

Posted in Uncategorized at 5:10 pm with tags:

The show was awesome. More on that later. In the meantime, Orbitz sucks my balls. I’ve just been through a hellish nightmare with their customer services.

My trip back was in two flights:
(ATA)
Depart Honolulu: 11:50am
Arrive Los Angeles: 7:05pm

(Frontier)
Depart Los Angeles: 8:42pm
Arrive Denver: 11:30pm

Orbitz issued me Paper Tickets in July for some reason. Saturday after the show I go online to confirm my flight time; which I do and am upset that it now says:
(ATA)
Depart Honolulu: 2:00pm
Arrive: Los Angeles: 9:15pm

Hmm, that arrives AFTER my flight from LA to Denver was supposed to take off. I was NEVER notified of this change (i have gmail and keep ALL my emails) and there is NOTHING in the orbitz system that warns of overlapping times.

I called once around 3am on 12/10, and was told I needed to go to the Frontier Ticket counter to get my paper tickets re-issued.

Oops, except Frontier doesn’t fly to Hawaii, so they don’t have a ticket counter. I go to the airport at 8:30, call again, and am told the same thing. I call a 3rd time, get transferred and then get cut off. Not a single one of the agents bothers to tell me there AREN’T any other flights leaving LA to Denver tonight, so even if Frontier reissues i’m stuck at the aiprort overnight. I call a 4th time, I request that Orbitz provide me accomodation for the night, as they were my travel agent and responsible for my trip. They deny and I am told they don’t provide accomodation and I’d need to contact Frontier, who surprisingly, told them they wouldn’t get me a room because they did NOTHING wrong. Anyways, I get into LA at 9:10 or so, and apparently will be on a flight to Denver at 6:44 am tomorrow.

Orbitz blows, their customer service was terrible (no one took responsibility for me, everyone passed the buck, got disconnected and transferred to much).

I won’t be using their services again, and encourage you to follow suit. Book straight with the airlines.

In the airport again

Posted in Uncategorized at 5:52 pm with tags:

In the airport again, seems like I’m always blogging from the airport.

Anyways, in Phoenix on a layover on my way to Honolulu for the U2/Pearl Jam concert saturday night. I’m very excited to get out of boulder/denver/integral for a while, and kick it with my old Santa Cruz homies while waiting to see two of the best bands of all time.

I’m officially unemployed now, and back on the prowl for a job. The tension between making money and working on a film career has arisen yet again, and I’m not quite sure how I’m going to deal with it.

However, I’m going to work hard on some side projects to make some extra cash, regardless of what job I get.

I took the photos for SantaCruztraveler.com last fall, and am finally going to sort through those next week.

Also, far more exciting than that, part of the old 514 Broadway crew (Daniel, Matt, and Lee) will be joining me in the creation of eye-strain.net; a cooperative blog dedicated to film, television, new media, and everything else. It’ll mainly be for fun at first but if we get good could certainly bring in some revenue one day!

contact me if you have e good job suggestion…

Junebug and the Office

Posted in Uncategorized at 5:34 pm with tags:

As I’m not jobless, and about to go on 4 days of vacation, I resolved to myself to not do shit this week other than close up loose ends at I-I…

Consequently, yesterday I watched the movie Junebug, and last night and today I watched the entirety of the BBC version of The Office. Having seen all 12 episodes plus the special, it strikes me how similar the show’s tone actually was to that of Junebug.

While Junebug and The Office both take place in radically different settings, and radically different cultures for that matter; what’s strikes me is how similar they really are thematically. Both are about people stuck in life, people so identified with their script and ego that they just can’t break free and act any differently. Characters in each often find themselves in situations that they know are wrong, but just don’t know how to stop themselves from pursuing any further. They know they need to act differently, but they literally don’t know how.

Both have that truly fascinating mix of humor and pain. Much of the humor comes from the absurd way people act in each, as does much of the pain. Both have moments that are truly painful to watch, painful because as viewers we can see the trainwrecks that are about to occur, and the inability of the people to get hit the breaks or move in a different direction.

The most powerful scene in Junebug I think for most is when Ashley talks to George in the hospital; when she finally allows herself to say the things she’s clearly known all along but was unable to before because it wasn’t part of her role, her script, the self she had to follow.
My favorite line that Ashely utters during another part of the movie, which should be a tender moment but breaks down because of her husbands inability to break free of his script:
“God loves you just the way you are, but he loves you too much to let you stay that way.”

A similarly powerful moment occurs during The Office Xmas special, which wrapped up the show. In what has to be one of the finest moments in television, David Brent finally stops performing and punches through his script and ego.

Anyway, cool stuff, check them both out.
