Incongruency at the Corporate Level

Posted in Uncategorized at 4:41 pm with tags:

Thanksgiving and Christmas are pretty much the only days I watch pro football on TV. I’m generally back in IL on these days and at our big family gatherings, where everyone else watches the games and thus so do I.

So anyway, watching a game last week on TurkeyDay and hey, that’s cool, the NFL has started a new program called “Play 60” that’s supposed to encourage young kids to get outside and play at least 60 minutes a day to stay physically fit.

That’s totally an awesome program and great idea, obesity in children is an increasingly growing problem!

But hey what’s this, the entire game was SPONSORED BY WENDY’S. Every 60 seconds or so Wendy’s was mentioned or the logo was flashed.

No one seemed to mention this rather glaring inconsistency. If you want kids to get fit, don’t encourage them to eat 2000 calorie meal at a fast food joint.

Futurama is Back!

I had forgotten these DVDs were coming out, wicked! I personally think the day Futurama was born was the day the Simpsons more or less died…

Cinematic Aspect Ratio

Posted in random thoughts at 1:04 pm with tags:

Had some downtime in the airport the other day, and while looking at one of the mounted screens, I suddenly asked myself why cinema/televisions have always had a greater width than height? Who decided 4:3 and 16:9 should be the way screens are shaped, and why?

The only real reason I could think of is that the human form is inherently vertical, we’re taller than we are wider. Landscape orientations allow you to cram a LOT of people in one screen.

Facebook Social Memory Wiki

Posted in Uncategorized at 5:23 pm with tags:

Had this idea last thanksgiving, talked with Stan about it a bit when he played with SongTales, and nearly forgot about it.

Was just now browsing over Facebook’s “Social Timeline” again. Somewhat nifty, but more or less useless. It’d be kick ass if they took it one step further and basically made it into a “calendar” that integrated the “events” function, and also allowed you to openly add PAST events and moments in time.

Things like Casey’s 30th Birthday, Niles’ wedding, The Chocolate Cake fight, the day I moved to Boulder, when my cat died, all seminal events in my life, could be added. This ‘date’ then becomes a wiki entry of a sort, with a general description of the evening, then comments by Approved attendees where they can post written recollections of the night, upload tagged photos, videos, etc…

Suddenly you could get lost for hours stumbling through your friends lives and events, and likely discover simple things like the girl you’re now dating was actually at that party before you knew each other, that you were only passed out on the beach in mexico for 15 minutes, or god knows what else. Integrate the memories in the social space. I think it’d be cool. I’ll make sure to ‘tag’ you in the memor-entry for when I wrote this blog post and you read it.

I Fell in Love at Target

Posted in Uncategorized at 2:28 pm with tags:

I fell in love at Target yesterday. She was a college student, shopping for a closet organizer, likely for her dorm room. I looked at her, she looked at me, and smiles were exchanged between me and this gentle great beauty.

Then some boy she was with showed up, and the coworker I was shopping with came back, so True Love parted ways.

I fall in love pretty much every time I go to Target, so much so that I think I should start hanging out there more often.

Target, you are the bullseye on my heart.

Your favorite rockin’ revolutionary songs?

Posted in Uncategorized at 2:41 pm with tags:

I’m making a list and need some help. What do you think are the *best* revolutionary/political/lets fucking change things/we are the people and you will hear us songs? Mainly interested in rock, but i know there’s quality hip hop, country, and obviously punk songs abound as well, which I’d like to hear about as well. A few I quickly came up with:

Masters of War
Know Your Rights
Fortunate Son
Gimme Some Truth
Rockin’ in the Free World
I Am A Patriot
Get Up Stand Up
Many Spearhead Songs
Ohio
Grievance
Many Rage songs

just a quick list, but I want the best of the best here. If you’ve got suggestions, please do send them my way.

How Sports Could Matter for the Rest of Us

Posted in Uncategorized at 11:19 am with tags:

Living here in Boulder, CO, I recently got to experience the inevitable ‘rush’ that any city/state goes through when one of their professional sports teams enters a championship or some type. And though the Rockies lost, there was certainly a ‘buzz’ around the town while they were playing. And frankly, I just didn’t care. I don’t know what went wrong, especially since I was born just outside chicago, a major sporting town. But for whatever reason, I didn’t get the sport gene, get bored to tears watching most sporting events, and just really can’t fathom how someone could give a damn. Rarely do any players on any professional teams have anything to do with the city they’re actually playing in, and beyond the name/logo there really isn’t anything else to a franchise.

So, while watching game 2 at a Sports bar a while back, I started thinking, what would make me care? And then it hit me, Sports Teams that represented causes that I believe in. It’d kind of be a marriage between the current sport franchises and something like product RED. What if the Colorado Rockies ‘represented’ BioDiesel, and every for every ticket/merchandise/beer they sold a small percentage went to that cause?

That I could get behind, the BioD Colorado Rockies Versus the Abstinence in Africa Oakland A’s.

Then at least it would mean *something* when a team won!

Sports 2.0, for the world-centric!
