How Sports Could Matter for the Rest of Us

Living here in Boulder, CO, I recently got to experience the inevitable ‘rush’ that any city/state goes through when one of their professional sports teams enters a championship or some type. And though the Rockies lost, there was certainly a ‘buzz’ around the town while they were playing. And frankly, I just didn’t care. I don’t know what went wrong, especially since I was born just outside chicago, a major sporting town. But for whatever reason, I didn’t get the sport gene, get bored to tears watching most sporting events, and just really can’t fathom how someone could give a damn. Rarely do any players on any professional teams have anything to do with the city they’re actually playing in, and beyond the name/logo there really isn’t anything else to a franchise.

So, while watching game 2 at a Sports bar a while back, I started thinking, what would make me care? And then it hit me, Sports Teams that represented causes that I believe in. It’d kind of be a marriage between the current sport franchises and something like product RED. What if the Colorado Rockies ‘represented’ BioDiesel, and every for every ticket/merchandise/beer they sold a small percentage went to that cause?

That I could get behind, the BioD Colorado Rockies Versus the Abstinence in Africa Oakland A’s.

Then at least it would mean *something* when a team won!

Sports 2.0, for the world-centric!

Music…….Non Stop

Another great weekend. Casey, Eric, and I took off early Friday afternoon to head up to Steamboat Springs, CO to catch Spearhead at their Free Summer Concert Series. The rainbow festival was up there earlier in the week, so it was a packed show full of only the finest hippiest et all. Magically enough, just after the sun went down it started to drizzle…..and there in the night sky was one of the most perfect rainbows I’ve seen, radiating behind us. The show was 2.5 hours of bliss and beer, then we headed up to the nearby national forest to camp for the evening. Drove back Saturday, chilled for the evening, then caught the fascinating World Cup final.

I’ve got a pretty great streak of music going right now….Stuart Davis the last week of June, then the 2 PJ/Petty Shows the weekend after, Spearhead last weekend, Pearl Jam (General Admission!!!) in SF this weekend, and I might quite possibly go to a Widespread Panic show the weekend after, and Ween/Flaming Lips the weekend after that. Would certainly be one of the best 5 weeks stretches of music in my life!

Played some Poker with some fellas last night…..I swept the newbie $5 table and took home a nice $20.

Other than that, things are pretty good. I heard back from Imagine, the organization I want to do some volunteer work for. They’ve matched me up with a group home a few blocks from here which I’m going to check out after my trip next week. Have my first Boulder Digital Arts Fast Filmmaking Incubator meeting tomorrow night, so I’ll hopefully get to meet some cool Boulder film folks. My practice is going fairly well too, I’m sitting twice a week on T/THs, and going to the gym M/W/F mornings. So life is definitely busy, and it feels like the summer is going by just a bit too quickly, but I’m having a fairly good time. My buddy Daniel is coming back from a year in Japan this week, so it’ll be great to catch up with him and some others during my quick trip out to SF this weekend. How’s it going out there? Sorry I haven’t had the energy to post anything thought provoking or interesting………Comments?
