(i kept waaaaaaay too much shit on my windows desktop)

Harry Potter

Read the final book this weekend and must say that despite the fact that so many of the narrative arcs played out exactly as I had predicated they might, they were played out so damn well it just didn’t matter. The battle of Hogwarts ended up being everything it should have been and more, fully carrying the weight of 6 novels along with it. Nearly all the criticisms of open loops, narrative inconsistencies, or poor plot points that I built up in my head as I was reading were all quelled in the end. One of rowling’s greatest achievements in this series has to be how damn well she played by her own rules, she doesn’t cheat at all and completely avoids any Deus ex machinas.

The series as a whole is truly a stunning collection of fantasy, and the progression from adolescent kids tale to adult tale of friendship and death is flawless. I can only imagine how mind blowing such a series might be for kids that started reading it at a young age, and have literally developed along side harry over the years. These are books for parents and children to read together at first, as is done with most young kids. Brilliantly however, they also provide amazing fodder for discussion between said parents and children as the series progresses and the kids move into adolescence and adulthood; as the books deal with some pretty heavy shit towards the end and definitively take on a much more adult tone (swearing from all ranges of characters, anger, sexual frustration, death, the power of choice, race), all of which in discussing I guarantee will make kids feel more adult. What an amazing way to give the young and the old something to talk about.

Rowling’s books are a brilliant achievement in the way they’ve seamlessly integrate a 7 novel story arc along with developmental levels. People will be reading these for years to come, and rightly so. Pretty exciting to have been alive when such narrative classics were made.

yeah, so if you haven’t read them do, they really are that good. You can burn through the first 3 books in a week really, so what are you waiting for?
