The Incredible Hulk

He’s totally my favorite superhero character, so needless to say I’m stoked for the new movie. Seems like it’s going to be a hybrid of the comics, Ang Lee’s Hulk, and the television show, which is wicked cool.

David Lynch on the iPhone

Yes, it’s a bit of film snobbery but I agree. Someday soon someone will watch Apocalypse Now on an iPhone and say they’ve seen it. Mr. Lynch is right……seeing is not experiencing.

Live Free of Die Hard, the IMDB typo of the day. From what I’ve heard about this latest McClaine outing, that’s definitely not bad advice.

Knocked Up

Highly recommended. Judd Aptow does it again, comedy and drama mixed to perfection. A startlingly poignant examination of both the light and dark sides of the masculine and feminine.

Training Log: Day 12

Posted in 12 week challenge, fitness at 5:01 pm with tags:

This morning was more hill jogging, which I find myself far more adverse to than lifting. Likely because I do it alone, and thus it takes 100% internal motivation, I find its harder to get out each morning. There was a nice chill breeze this morning that made it even tougher, though once I got warmed up the wind no longer registered.

My first three charges up the hill were pretty intense, with #2 in particular being the closest to an all out sprint. By 5 & 6 I was chugging along at a noticeably slower pace.

As always I got really congested fairly quickly, and found myself coughing quite a bit. The whole not being able to breathe thing has gotten really old, so I’ve scheduled an appointment with an ENT for Friday, assuming my cobra coverage will back date (I’m 99% sure it will). It’ll be interesting to see when this doctor recommends, though in any case I just hope it starts working faaaaast.

I had a fairly decent 55 minute meditation this morning, mostly got lost in random wandering thoughts but had a few nice moments of stillness. The 55 minute sits are definitely my edge right now, my body starts freaking out after a half hour or so and just wants to jump up and to check email or something. feels good though, slowly training myself to actually appreciate having nothing to do but ‘be’.

On a sadder note I saw Spiderman 3 this weekend and was severely disappointed. Sam Raimi is like Google in that because I hold such high expectations of them/him, anything less than the very best is an extreme let down. So was the case with SP3, which was barely cohesive and by far the worst in the trilogy. I’d at least like to believe it was because of some producer interference but that might just be a pipe dream.

Oscars are this sunday

Why I still let myself get excited by this overlong, boring, predictable hollywood affair, I do not know.

But, alas, I do, and its fun to get semi excited about something. This year’s best picture nominees are actually fairly diverse for once and pretty damn interesting. And although the delight of watching Jon Stewart host won’t be there this year, I’ll sludge through it with a few glasses of wine.

seeing The Secret. Wow, more or less the most partial theory of anything I’ve ever seen. Do it if it feels good, think about whatever you want and you’ll get it.

Garbage…..

Well it took three days, starting Thursday and finishing Saturday morning, but I finally watched the complete Extended Edition of LOTR on my big ass theater. And boy howdy was it worth it. Still looking for a job, nailed a phone interview for customer service last week. Not what I wanting be doing but I certainly need the money.

Review: The Sweet Hereafter

Posted in Uncategorized at 1:44 pm with tags:

“No good movie is depressing; all bad movies are depressing.” -R.E
This movie has been on my list of to see(s) for years; I think it was Mark Sweeney that originally recommended it to me back in the 90s. Like so other movies of its time, its a non-linear film. Unlike so many other movies of its time, it wasn’t non-linear for shock, twist, or confusion.

One of my favorite things about winter is that time, late at night, when its been snowing all day, and all the built up snow absorbs much of the ‘noise’ of the world, and things become muffled and silent.

The Sweet Hereafter is about that silence. There’s a horrible accident involving a school bus, and many children die. The movie follows the townspeople and a lawyer hired to represent them as they deal with the aftermath. The emotional distance and silence of the survivors is mimiced by setting/location of the film. A small and remote canadian town, with short days and long nights, surrounded by mountains that nearly devour everything in site. (mountains=accident).

There isn’t much emotion expressed in this film, a few outbursts of tears here and there. Probably the strongest moment in the film is during a flashback, a heartwrenching memory about rushing a baby to the hospital. Definitely my favorite part of the film.

Anyways, check it out, good stuff.

Review: The Man Without a Past

Posted in Uncategorized at 1:37 pm with tags:

I don’t even remember how this one got on my queue. A Finnish movie released in 2002, The Man Without a Past was one of the quieter movies I’ve seen in a while. There’s no plot really, characters have names, but it doesn’t even matter. This is a movie about small moments and subtle jokes, both of which can easily be missed. There’s no huge moral here, no messages that bang you over the head with teachings of kindness or forgiveness. There are no heroes, and not even really villains (just hoodlums). Having no past forces one to inevitably live in the present, as the main character of this film so genuinely does. Similary, watching the move works the same way, in that as its essentially plotless, one doesn’t have to worry about anything more than the current scene, which is what allows for such subltely to exist in the movie.

Didn’t change my life, but certainly didn’t harm it.

The Descent

Posted in Uncategorized at 12:42 pm with tags:

I don’t dig many horror movies, I’m usually just bored watching most of them. However, I saw The Descent last week and actually really liked it. It’s a smart, well crafted horror-thriller that’s a little sci-fi cheesey at parts, but has enough ambiguity to make for a really interesting movie. Plus, the most horrifying moments in the film have nothing to do with the evil monsters, but with claustrophobia, exhaustion, panic, betrayal, loss, paranoia, and so on.

I’d highly suggest checking it out. Plus any movie that has a poster referencing a dali picture is just plain coooooool
